Interested in the origins of this artwork or the Nicaraguan artisan behind the over 50 designs displayed on this site? So am I. Who am I? I’m a Peace Corps Volunteer working with local artisans to connect them with new markets in other countries to help support their families.

Back to the cabuya, Doña Ligia is the artisan behind the “Cuadros hecho con cabuya” or “Paintings made with cabuya.” Cabuya is the name of the type of colored rope she uses to create her designs of Nicaraguan landscapes, people and folklore.

I found Doña Ligia through the owner of Hotel Café, a hotel in my city that has her work up in the lobby. The hotel owner knew only her name and the city she lived in, finding her exact location was up to me. As I was leaving she added that she would be very pleased if I could comeback with an address as she is asked about the cabuya artwork quite often by hotel guests. If you would like to see the cuadros that she has in the lobby or would like to see how cabuya looks framed click here.

Well, four hours, two bus rides and a taxi cab later I ended up on Doña Ligia’s doorstep, sometimes it amazes me how easy it can be to find someone in this country with just a first name, city and occupation. An hour after my arrival I had prices, dimensions, digital photos of her designs and an idea to start this online showcase of her work. As I learn more about cabuya I will be able to answer those first questions, but for now check out her gallery and if you have any questions, suggestions or sales inquires please email me.
